Housing and Care

Housing choices are often influenced by the location of services needed to meet the health requirements of the care recipient. Ease of access to appropriate services tends to become more important as health needs increase.

Home Safety

  • Home modifications that enable a person with disabilities to perform the activities of daily living as safely and comfortably as possible, while maintaining independence. Click here for more information.

  • Simple changes can be made in the home to help prevent falls and related injuries.

  • The Safe Living Guide - a seniors' guide to home safety, nutrition and activity.

  • Home Adaptations for Independence (HAFI) - Provides financial assistance to help eligible low-income seniors and people with disabilities in British Columbia to continue to live in the comfort of their home.

There's no place like home. By taking simple measures, you can reduce your chances of being injured at home. It's a matter of knowing what the potential hazards are, taking precautions and making simple adjustments to the home.

Help In the Home

As people age they may require services that help them to remain independent in their own home.
  • A Guide to Your Care (PDF 1.6M) provides information and eligibility criteria on publicly funded home and community care services.

Future Housing Needs

As an individual's needs for support increase, they may no longer be able to remain independent at home. Depending on their needs, they may be eligible for assisted living, a housing option with assistance for personal care, or for residential care services when they need access to 24 hour professional nursing care.

Subsidized Housing for Seniors

Hilary has been living on her own since her husband died. She was out of the workforce for many years while she cared for her husband at home. Hilary's pension, her sole source of income is insufficient to meet her many needs so she has now begun to look for a new living situation.
