Elder Abuse Prevention

The Province of British Columbia has joined with others around the world in honouring and supporting seniors by proclaiming June 15th as World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD).

Elder Abuse - It's Time To Face The Reality

Unfortunately, some seniors are still the targets of abuse and neglect. Some seniors may be the victims of abuse and neglect by caregivers or family members. Unscrupulous individuals may victimize seniors through illegal charity or investment scams, and unethical sales practices. Seniors need to protect themselves by staying informed about their rights and options.

Low-income seniors with legal issues may be unable to afford legal advice. In British Columbia, resources such as the Legal Services Society are available to help eligible seniors and their caregivers access legal advice and representation.

Seniors who are victims of other types of crime can contact a range of victims’ services.

HealthLink BC provides an overview on the topic of elder abuse, and more detailed information in their Elder Abuse Prevention Series.

For additional information about action against elder abuse, see Other Resources.

The Public Guardian and Trustee offers resources for those seeking help for vulnerable seniors, including a downloadable publication called How You Can Help People Manage Finances and Legal Matters When They Cannot Manage on Their Own.

If you think a senior is being abused, taken advantage of or neglected, or if they cannot help themselves, you should report the situation by contacting the Public Guardian and Trustee of British Columbia (PGT) regarding financial or legal abuse; or Victim Services regarding physical or emotional abuse.

In any emergency, dial 911 to contact your local emergency services.
