Healthcare

British Columbia seniors have access to one of the best healthcare systems anywhere. This section of the website provides information on important programs and tells you about your options for medical care.
Everyone in British Columbia is required to sign up for the Medical Services Plan (MSP) and pay a monthly premium to cover services provided by physicians and other healthcare providers. Those aged 65 and over who are enrolled in MSP receive a Gold CareCard with their personal health number.
The cost of prescription medication can be significant for some seniors. The Province’s PharmaCare program assists British Columbia seniors by subsidizing eligible prescription drugs and designated medical supplies. The Fair PharmaCare plan provides help based on your net income.
If you need medical care, you can contact your family physician (in some cases, a visit in your own home can be arranged) or access services at a hospital or other medical facility.
Through HealthLink BC, seniors can access information about various health-related topics, check their symptoms, and learn about available healthcare programs and services. It is also a source of information on the safe use of medications.
You can also call 8-1-1 free of charge, to speak to a nurse, pharmacist or dietitian. Translation services for 8-1-1 are available in over 130 languages, reflecting British Columbia’s diverse population.
Seniors with specific medical conditions such as arthritis, diabetes and other chronic conditions, can learn more about their treatment options through reliable, up-to-date Internet resources. If you or someone close to you faces mental health or addiction issues, you can learn how to get help from various health service providers.
Many options are available for seniors who require special assistance. The Personal Supports website and information line provide information about programs that provide equipment and assistive devices to seniors with disabilities. Home and Community Care can help some seniors stay independent longer, while assisted living programs are designed for seniors who require more support.
Finally, the Province of British Columbia has services to help ensure the dignity and quality of life of B.C. citizens at the end of their lives.
