Housing
From living independently in the family home, to the programs and support provided by Home and Community Care, seniors in British Columbia have a wide range of housing and care alternatives. But planning for the future is critical. By 2029, nearly 30 per cent of Canada’s seniors will be ages 75 to 84 and 13 per cent will be over age 85. As our lifespan increases, many more seniors are able to remain highly independent. Others will require more support. Whether you own your own home or rent, supports are in place to help seniors with housing. Additionally, for those who require assistance to remain active in the community, services are in place to meet individual needs.
If you own your home, you may want to learn about help with property taxes. Seniors may also be able to get financial aid for home renovations that can help them to remain living independently.
Seniors who rent their homes can access resources for low-income tenants, like Shelter Aid for Elderly Renters (SAFER) and other affordable housing programs.
Some seniors may benefit from supported housing options that offer some assistance with basic daily activities. These supported housing options may be subsidized for eligible low-income seniors.
Visit our housing resources page for more information on the housing options for seniors.
