Transportation

Whether you rely on public transit or drive your own vehicle, you need reliable transportation to help you stay active and independent.

If you use public transit, seniors’ fare discounts, the Bus Pass Program and other programs can help make getting around easier and more affordable for seniors in British Columbia.

Did you know there is a “Taxi Bill of Rights”? Seniors who use taxis may want to learn more about the Taxi Saver Program and other alternatives to public transit, such as Greyhound and VIA Rail.

In addition, HandyDART Custom Transit and the Elders Transportation Program (for First Nations Elders) offer more affordable options to help seniors get from place to place.

If you own and drive a car, be sure to investigate reduced insurance rates for seniors. If you are a military veteran, you may be able to get special veterans’ licence plates. If you’re concerned about how long you should continue to drive, investigate the BCAA’s Living Well, Driving Well Workshops. As well, Drive BC offers up-to-the-minute information about weather conditions, travel hazards and road closures.

Some seniors who continue to drive find less need for a personal vehicle. You may want to look at alternatives such as car-sharing or occasional car rental.

In British Columbia, the ferry system is a vital part of our transportation network. Look at ferry routes and seniors’ ferry discounts to learn more.

If you need transportation for medical reasons, several options are available.
